Golden Age Superman
028B July 1940

Golden Age Superman is back again, this time with 100% more voices!  This episode covers the second half of Superman's adventures from July 1940, and I am joined by Charlie Niemeyer (of Superman in the Bronze Age and frequently of The Thrilling Adventures of Superman) to look at Action Comics 28, where Jack Burnley becomes the regular artist on the title.  It's circus silliness involving a thief in leopard print, so brace yourselves!  Then Clark disguises himself as a tramp during the week while finally taking down the "Lamite" on Sunday in the newspapers, with a trip to Happyland Amusement Park coming at us from the radio show!  The fun-filled episode is filled with fun, so check it out!

028A July 1940

Welcome back to Golden Age Superman.  This is the first of two episodes that will examine the Superman adventures published during the month of July 1940, and this episode focuses on Superman 6.  First, Lois Lane is accused of murder.  Then Clark and Lois visit the small town of Gateston to help their newspaper expose the protection rackets going on there.  In South America, earthquakes and tornadoes ravage a small country, but someone is trying to stop the citizens of Metropolis from sending aid.  And finally, a corrupt construction company is killing crowds with their inferior building materials.  What can Superman do to help in all of these situations?  Find out in this episode!  Also, your emails and iTunes reviews are read!

027 June 1940

After last month's monster four-hour episode, Golden Age Superman is back with a more manageable length to cover the stories of June 1940.  In this episode, I take a look at Action Comics 27, which features Clark's and Lois's investigations of a rehabilitation home for wayward youths.  There is abuse afoot, and Lois is determined to stop it, and if you think she'll need Superman's help, you're right.  And thus ensues one of the longest battles ever between Superman and a simple mortal!  Will the Man of Steel prevail against ... MR. TWEED??!!  Find out in this latest episode!

026 May 1940

Welcome to Golden Age Superman.  This episode, I spend a little while taking a look at Superman 5, New York World's Fair Comics 1940, Action Comics 26, and all the usual monthly doses of Superman in other media.  Highlights include Alex Evell's campaign against the Planet (get it?  evell = evil), Jack Burnley's first work on Superman at the New York World's Fair, and Professor Cobalt's quack clinic taking advantage of FDR's drive to cure polio. All that and more make this the BIGGEST EPISODE EVER! of the show.  We also see the debut of two new powers -- photographic memory, and super facial muscular control!  You won't wanna miss it!

025 April 1940

April showers bring May flowers, and they also bring conniving female reporters who MUST KNOW SUPERMAN'S REAL IDENTITY!  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this latest episode covers Action Comics 25, the first time Lois Lane ever sought to find out who Superman really is.  It's a bit of a romp with Superman being immobilized by hypnotism and then killing lots of people.  In other words, Golden Age Goodness!!  Also, over in the Superman radio show, we have the debut of JIMMY OLSEN!!  So, it's a big month all around for the world of the man with the S on his chest.  Come check it out!

What do you do if your neglect and indulge your son, and he turns out to be a bit of a bum?  Why, call in Superman to straighten him out, of course!  That's what old Rufus Carnahan does in Action Comics 24, the Superman adventure discussed in this episode of Golden Age Superman.  But will his son Peter be able to elude his gambling debtors?  Also, Superman fights for the slums (again) in the daily newspaper strips and goes off to war (again) in the Sunday strips.  Coverage of the Superman radio show also continues with the dastardly doings of the Yellow Mask!  Check it out!

In the email section, a listener mentions a Superman Homepage article about Superman and phone booths.  That can be found here.

023 February 1940 B

Luthor is back, for the first time!  In this second half of Golden Age Superman's coverage of Superman's adventures in February 1940, Superman 4 takes us on two very different adventures with Luthor.  First we see him challenge Superman to a series of superfeats, and then our jaws hit the floor as he lures Superman to an ancient underground Pacific city to, um, fight dinosaurs.  And a giant rat.  But that's okay because there are two more stories after that full of Superman goodness, and joining me again on this journey is Superpodcaster Michael Bailey (of Views from the LongboxFrom Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast, and Xavier's Podcast for Gifted Youngsters).  I hope you enjoy it, and I'll see you again next week!

022 February 1940 A

Golden Age Superman is proud to present its first two-part episode!  The second month of 1940 saw more Superman content being published than in any month previous, with Superman 4 (for the first time presenting four all-new stories) and Action Comics 23 both featuring the first adventures of none other than Luthor himself.  Then there are the newspaper daily and Sunday strips, a special comic story published in Look magazine, AND the debut of the Adventures of Superman RADIO show!  Talk about huge.  And, not afraid to take something big and make it bigger, I've invited Superman podcaster extraordinaire Michael Bailey (of Views from the Longbox and From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast) to join me in taking a look at everything Superman was up to this month.  To give everything the time it deserves, I've split it over two episodes, and this is the first.  Have fun with it!

021 January 1940

Golden Age Superman is starting out a new year and a new decade. I'm back going solo this week to look at Action Comics 22, where Superman heads off to the war in Europe and runs into beautiful spies, intrigue, and massacre.  Then in the newspaper strips, the stories take a different approach on the war, as Clark Kent takes a job with spies and saboteurs.  Is it possible Clark Kent has turned traitor??

020 December 1939

Golden Age Superman is back again to finish out not just the year, but the 1930s decade!  AND to complete its celebration of the Ultra Humanite's farewell to Superman's comic stories with Action Comics 23.  For this final installment, I have J David Weter of Superman Forever Radio with me, and we talk about Ultra trying out her new life as a woman and what Superman has to do to stop her.  It's probably the best Ultra-Humanite story we've had, just in time for the character to say good-bye.  Then it's off to the daily and Sunday newspaper strips where war hits Europe and Superman get attacked ... by a BEAR??!!

019 Golden Age Superman -- November 1939

Apologies for the delays, but Golden Age Superman is here once again, and this time I am joined by Superman blogger Stephen Lacey of the World of Superman blog. This week, Superman gets an abusive caregiver arrested for arson and stops some jewel smugglers with the help of Lois Lane in Superman 3.  Then it's Action Comics 20, the second installment in the final trilogy of the Ultra Humanite, where Ultra does some gender bending and comes out of the story with more estrogen and soft skin than he had last issue.  And in the newspaper dailies, Clark goes to work for the DAILY PLANET!!

018 Golden Age Superman -- October 1939

This week, on Golden Age Superman, I am joined by good friend Donovan Morgan Grant of Amazing Spider-Man Classics and Clone Saga Chronicles.  Together, we take a look at Action Comics 19, the first of the final three stories to feature the Ultra-Humanite.  The people of Metropolis are dying from the Purple Plague, and only Superman can stop the one responsible.  Then it's off to the newspaper strips where Superman is victim of female shenanigans on several sides as the royal deathplot continues.

017 Golden Age Superman -- September 1939

Thank you for downloading and listening to Golden Age Superman.  This week, World War II officially gets underway in Europe, and in Action Comics 18, Superman is confronted with the vile evils of blackmail.  He has to help a senator avoid some nefarious schemes so that he can get re-elected, which you'd hope would turn out to be more exciting than it sounds.  You'd hope.  Next week, though, brings us the first installment of the Ultra-Humanite's final trilogy of stories in the Golden Age, so come back for that!

016 Golden Age Superman -- August 1939

This week on Golden Age Superman, it's bunches of Superman stories in the first episode to have both the monthly and quarterly books in full effect.  In Superman 2, reprinting several stories from the newspapers, the Man of Tomorrow helps a depressed ex boxing champ, "Superman Champions Universal Peace" and kills a WHOLE buncha people along the way, and stops a skyscraper construction project from being sabotaged in "Superman and the Skyscrapers".  Then in Action Comics 17, the Man of Steel learns that the passenger liners of a shipping line are getting blown up one by one, and you'll never guess who's behind it, on his way to world domination.  All this and an announcement of a new show I'm going to be involved in!  Enjoy and tell all your friends!

School's been keeping me busy, but in the face of all homework and paper deadlines, I once again have for you an episode of Golden Age Superman!  This week, in Action Comics 16, it's back to social justice basics for the Man of Steel, as Superman decides to do something about gambling and the numbers racket that is destroying lives and finances in Metropolis.  What?  In where?  That's right, we finally get a name for the city of Superman's exploits!  All this, and our first decoding, too!

014 Golden Age Superman -- June 1939

Just a few days later than usual on this one, but here is the episode of Golden Age Superman, covering the two issues of Action Comics that were released in June.  (Why were there two?  Listen and all shall be made known!)  First, in Action Comics 14, Superman is lured into a trap by the Ultra-Humanite, who managed to survive last issue's plane crash.  And Ultra sets the standard for all supervillain traps to come by making it way more convoluted and prone to fail than it needed to be.  Then in Action Comics 15, Superman goes hunting for treasure, hoping the gold from a sunken Spanish galleon will save a nearly bankrupt boys' home.

013 Golden Age Superman -- May 1939

This is it.  This is the big one.  The premiere of Superman issue #1.  And to commemorate the event, I have brought together some of the best in Superman podcasting today -- Michael Bailey and Jeffrey Taylor of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast, Charlie Niemeyer from Superman in the Bronze Age, and Kaman Stowell of the Superman Video Podcast.  Together, we first take a look at Action Comics 13, where a protection racket turns out rather randomly to be the sinister machination of Superman's first recurring villain -- the Ultra-Humanite.  Then we look at the new material in Superman 1, including the hero's origin, and reminisce on how this book has affected all our lives.  And we can't leave out the Action Comics backup features or the newspaper strips.  So come join the party!

012 Golden Age Superman -- April 1939

Welcome to a new era in Golden Age Superman, as I say goodbye to the days where Superman was only ever published in one book.  This week, I'll be taking a look at Action Comics 12, where Superman declares war on reckless drivers, but is a bit reckless himself in the process.  Then it's a trip to the World's Fair with the Man of Tomorrow in New York World's Fair Comics.  With more books come more minutes spent talking about them, so this episode is a bit longer than they have usually been, but that's going to be more common as we move forward.  So come along into this new chapter in the life of the Man of Steel!

It's happy new year time here at Golden Age Superman as we say good bye to 1938 and hello to 1939, the year that saw Superman's popularity begin to explode.  In addition to the detective antics of Action Comics 9, this episode also covers Superman's premiere in a daily newspaper strip that will run for decades.  Later in the year, we will see an over-sized one-shot special leading off with a Superman story as well as the beginning of a quarterly comic book entirely devoted to his adventures.

Welcome back everyone to Golden Age Superman.  This episode, we are taking a look at Action Comics 6, published in October 1938, which sees Superman face down his own ... personal manager??  It's a cornball story with lots of good bits, especially with the evils of Lois Lane.  Also, my thoughts and feelings on the casting of Henry Cavill as the newest Superman!  So the episode's a bit longer than usual this week.  Hope you enjoy!

Hello, and welcome again to Golden Age Superman.  This week, we're taking a look at Action Comics 5, which is probably my favorite issue we've done so far.  The Superman story is a little shorter, but it's a rather good action-packed adventure with Superman saving a town from a ruptured dam.  Also, the Superman/Clark/Lois triangle officially starts with this issue.  So come check it out!

001 Golden Age Superman -- May 1938

Welcome and thank you for checking out this new podcast on the Golden Age Superman.  Here, we'll be covering every appearance of the character from Action Comics 1 forward.

In this first episode, I take some time to introduce myself and the purpose of the show, but then we get down to business examining the first issue of Action Comics, focusing on the Superman story, but also taking a brief look at the rest of the contents of the issue.

For now, each episode will simply consist of an Action Comics synopsis and review.  Down the road, when there are multiple issues per month, I'll cover those as well, grouping issues into episodes according to release date.  Most of Superman's titles were not monthly, so cover dates are sometimes hard to classify, so we'll stick to approximate release dates of the issues.

I hope you enjoy the ride.  Golden Age Superman is a proud member of the Superman Podcast Network.  You can follow the show on Facebook or subscribe to it on iTunes.  If you wish to send feedback, you may do so below or via email.  Thank you for listening!
